Dr Anne Howson

ahowson

Dr. Howson specializes in individual cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for the management of depression, bipolar, and anxiety disorders, as well as an adjunct treatment for psychosis. Additional areas of interest and expertise include the provision of services to LGBTQ clients, and the integration of motivational enhancement therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) skills training for concurrent addictions and mental health issues.

Within a collaborative self-management model, she works with clients to achieve treatment goals they have set for themselves. The use of evidence-based psychological treatment strategies helps clients to become more knowledgeable about the factors that contribute to their difficulties i.e. unhelpful attitudes, thoughts, communication styles, and coping behaviours. By learning and applying new, more helpful skills, and building on their personal strengths, clients are able to create lasting, positive changes in their lives.

Dr. Howson trained at UBC Hospital’s Anxiety Disorders Unit, and has worked in a number of inpatient and outpatient hospital settings in the lower mainland over the past 17 years. She has been with Changeways Clinic since 2003, also works part-time at St. Paul’s Hospital’s Immunodeficiency Clinic in the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, and is a Clinical Instructor with the Department of Psychiatry at the UBC Faculty of Medicine.

Professional affiliations include registration with the College of Psychologists of BC (#1539), BCPA, CPA, and a founding member of the CACBT (Canadian Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies).

Dr. Howson loves working with people from all walks of life and is passionate about increased public access to evidence-based psychological treatment in BC and Canada.

For that ever important work-life balance, Dr. Howson enjoys book clubs, films, hiking, yoga, mindfulness practice, nature, and playing the ukulele!
