Dr. Quincy Young

My areas of expertise

I specialize in treating depression, grief, and anxiety disorders with an emphasis on the interplay between these conditions and physical health. Much of my career has been focused on helping people learn to cope with chronic illnesses and to adjusting to major life changes - whether such changes are planned (such as retirement) or out of one’s control (such as a new diagnosis of a medical condition).

I have expertise in helping people adopt healthy lifestyles, including helping people to successfully: quit smoking, increase physical activity, and improve eating habits.

My approach to therapy

The foundation of my practice is a cognitive-behavioural treatment (CBT) approach, into which I weave elements of mindfulness and acceptance therapy. I have discovered that a collaborative working relationship between therapist and client promises the best outcomes. While I bring my expertise in a variety of evidence-based strategies for symptom management and behaviour change, you are the ultimate expert on your thoughts, feelings, expectations, and life experiences. It is essential that we come together so that we can teach each other what we know: You will help me learn to understand you and your unique outlook on the world, and I will help you learn how you can apply a variety of strategies for successfully meeting your therapy goals.

My background

I was born in Ethiopia into a family of expatriate Americans. When I was five years old, my parents moved my brothers and I back to the United States, where I went on to do all of my schooling. I completed my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Montana, and I came to Vancouver to do my clinical residency. I fell in love with beautiful BC, obtained my Canadian citizenship, and have been here ever since. In addition to my practice at Changeways clinic, I am also employed as a clinical psychologist at St. Paul’s Hospital where, for the past 15 years, I have worked at the Heart Centre. At the Heart Centre I provide psychological services to patients with end-stage heart failure as well as those who need transplants.

I am a Registered Psychologist in the province of British Columbia.
