Anxiety is an essential and normal aspect of the human experience, but in certain circumstances it can escalate to become a major issue in a person’s life: An anxiety disorder. But where is the border between normal experience and treatable condition? What are the most common manifestations of disabling anxiety, and how are they diagnosed and treated?

This newly-developed workshop reviews each of the primary anxiety disorders for clinicians, students, and others. Covered are:

• Panic disorder
• Agoraphobia
• Specific phobia
• Social phobia
• Obsessive compulsive disorder
• Generalized anxiety disorder
• Post-traumatic stress disorder
• ...and related conditions

After an overview of the nature of anxiety, each disorder is discussed with regard to the following topics:

• Nature of the disorder
• Prevalence and epidemiology
• Diagnosing the problem (including use of the provided diagnostic sheet)
• Related conditions and differential diagnosis
• Evidence-based approaches to treatment
• Prognosis

Who should attend?

This program is a survey of all of the major anxiety disorders, and so is suited to those wishing an overview of the field. The program may be of particular benefit for those individuals relatively new to practice or newly involved in tailoring treatment approaches to specific presentations. Note that the program reviews evidence-based treatment but does not provide training in such treatment -- it is more of a “what is it and how do I recognize it” than a “how do I treat it” course.

This course could be combined with Relaxation Skills Training and/or Conducting Effective Exposure Therapy to create a two-day or three-day program.
