      Professional Development Day

      LGBT 101: Issues for Educators
      School District 42 - Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows 8:30 - 11:15; 12:00-2:30
What is sexual orientation, exactly? How does it develop and when do young people self-define? What about gender identity? What are the issues and potential pitfalls in the coming out process? Are LGBT youth at higher risk of self-harm? In this good-natured sprint through the complicated field of human sexuality, Dr Randy Paterson presents some of what we know, some of what we thought we knew but don't, and some of what we'd like to know but until now have been too afraid to ask. Plus, he brings an selection of questions he has been asked over the past 20 years of sexuality training, and invites you to bring your own.

      ONLINE WEBINAR

The Evidence-Based and Individualized Treatment of Depression. 6 Tuesdays through November 6.
      Online 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM Pacific, 3 sessions, 6 CEUs
Major depression is one of the most difficult challenges a person can confront, yet remarkably effective treatments have been identified. The challenge for the clinician is to take the lines of evidence-based treatment and create an integrated program tailored to the needs of the individual client. Where should you start, and which components are important? Behavioural activation? Lifestyle modification? Dietary management? Social life enhancement? Situational problem-solving? Cognitive restructuring? Emotional strength-building? Exploring the role of meaning?

In this six-session webinar, Dr Randy Paterson provides a rationale and strategy for integrating all of these approaches into a sequence tailored to the individual client. We travel step-by-step through the process, all the way from intake assessment to relapse prevention.

Along the way, participants are introduced to over 40 client handouts and exercise sheets designed to enhance therapy and support change, each provided in pdf format, ready to be printed as appropriate for use with your own clients.

      2-Day Workshop

      Relaxation Skills and Exposure Therapy
      location_on Halifax, Nova Scotia access_time 8 AM - 4 PM both days
This two-day interactive workshop equips occupational therapists with the fundaments to increase their competence and confidence in using two evidence-informed interventions for clients with anxiety: relaxation skills training and exposure therapy.

Day 1 of this two-day workshop focuses on the nature of stress and anxiety, the point at which anxiety becomes an anxiety disorder, and training in a set of relaxation therapy skills to assist clients in managing their own stress response. The emphasis is on diaphragmatic breathing training, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), and passive relaxation. Participants will experience each of the techniques themselves and engage in practice simulation in dyads and receive feedback and recommendations on technique.

Day 2 focuses on the use of exposure therapy, the foundation of evidence-based intervention for each of the anxiety disorders. Although seemingly straightforward, the effectiveness of exposure therapy decreases dramatically when several basic tenets are not followed. This session provides guidelines for effective exposure therapy and provides participants with practice in hierarchy development. The concepts covered in the workshop are adapted to exposure with specific phobia, social phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and post-traumatic stress. Participants learn the strategies, then conduct several simulations in triads to develop treatment plans for several presenting problems.

Participants receive a package of resource materials including presentation notes, over 30 pages of handouts for clients, a set of five relaxation training scripts, a guide to running a 6-session relaxation skills group if desired, and an audio CD that can be reproduced for clients for home practice.
