Dr Martha Capréol
I believe that every individual has the ability to live a fulfilling, meaningful life.
You may be feeling somehow blocked from living the life you would like. My role as a therapist is to help you find a way around any barriers. We would work together to help you get unstuck and allow you to make positive changes in your life. You probably did not expect to be at this place and may feel unsure about talking to someone. I strive to create a compassionate and caring environment so that you can feel comfortable exploring difficult issues.
My aim is to help you develop a wide array of ‘tools’ that will be useful for the rest of your life.
By learning about yourself and developing new ways of coping, you can move forward in your life with more confidence. We would work together to build a program that will help you. I am open and responsive and will modify my approach to best suit your needs and preferences. I work collaboratively so that the therapy experience can be as effective as possible.
My psychotherapy approach combines well established cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques with more recent CBT variants that emphasize mindfulness and acceptance (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)).
I completed my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2000 and have been in private practice in Vancouver since that time. I am a Registered Psychologist in the province of British Columbia. In addition, I am certified in CBT by the Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (CACBT).
My clinical work has involved helping adults and youth experiencing difficulties with anxiety, depression, every day stress, and coping with chronic pain and illness, as well as those going through major life transitions (such as starting a family).
In addition to working at Changeways Clinic, I also work as a consultant and workshop leader for CBT Connections Ltd. I provide training and consultation to therapists learning cognitive behavioural therapy. In addition, I am a consultant with AnxietyBC and one of the developers of the soon to be launched New Mothers website. This website is designed to help pregnant moms and moms with young children manage their anxiety. I formerly had a psychology practice at the North Shore Stress and Anxiety Clinic and consulted for human resources companies. I also have a longstanding interest in teaching others about health, and I have taught upper year Health Psychology classes at the University of British Columbia as well as Introductory Psychology at Douglas College.
I have also published professional articles and developed health promotion literature on behalf of the BC Partners for Mental Health and Addiction. For an example, please see Healthy Eating and Living Well. For more information, please visit me at www.drmarthacapreol.com.
