How does therapy work?
So we’ve all heard about therapy. But what happens, exactly, and how is it supposed to help anything (or anyone) get better? Let’s tackle that head-on.
Online therapy
Most therapy takes place in person, in the office. But since covid, we have all become accustomed to working remotely at times. At Changeways Clinic we offer both in-person and online therapy. The research suggests that these modalities are about equally effective. While in-person work has certain advantages, online therapy has some too: no commuting to the clinic, you get to relax in the comfort of your own home, and your therapist may be able to “accompany” you on some therapy tasks. Here are some tips for making the most of online therapy.
What is CBT?
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is one of the most powerful forms of psychotherapy. Our clinicians use CBT and allied forms of therapy (like acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical approaches, mindfulness-based approaches, and more). You can tell from the name that CBT works with the ways we think and the things that we do. But what does that mean, really? But what about the emotions - aren’t they important too?
What is cognitive therapy?
Cognitive behaviour therapy is a collective name for approaches that emphasize the ways we think and the things we do. In this video we zoom in on the cognitive side of things: discovering how our thoughts influence our lives - and how they sometimes do not serve us well.
What is behaviour therapy?
If cognitive work targets our thoughts, then behaviour therapy targets our actions. But how? Behavioural approaches are incredibly varied, ranging from skill development (like assertive communication or diaphragmatic breathing training), to exposure-based therapy for anxiety, to goal setting for life satisfaction, to concrete strategies to overcome addictive or unhelpful behaviours.
