Dr Maeve Cyr

Registered Psychologist

My areas of practice

I provide individual therapy to adolescents and adults for concerns related to depression/low mood, anxiety, OCD, relationships, and adjustment. My training and experience may fit well for those navigating life transitions, particularly young adults.

We know that the ways in which families interact can influence mental health challenges like obsessions and compulsions, anxiety, and depression. For this reason, I will sometimes work directly with family members (e.g., parents) on determining how they can best support a loved one.

My approach to therapy

The primary approach I use is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT); however, I also frequently draw from relationship- and process-oriented theories/approaches (e.g., attachment, psychodynamic). I find that it can sometimes be helpful to incorporate principles and techniques from other therapies (e.g., dialectical behavior therapy [DBT], acceptance and commitment therapy [ACT]) as well, depending on a person’s needs and goals.

My overarching therapeutic philosophy is developmentally informed, meaning that I operate from the perspective that context matters when it comes to mental health. For example, my work regularly involves considering how factors such as close relationships (past and present) and broader social systems may impact well-being.

I aim to offer an affirming therapeutic space where individuals have the option to explore such issues, while also supporting them with taking active steps to make changes that feel meaningful.

My background

I completed my graduate training (MA and PhD) in clinical psychology through Simon Fraser University. This involved supervised practicums in psychological assessment and treatment across university-based, hospital, community mental health, youth forensic, and private practice settings. Much of this training was developmentally focused.

I completed my pre-doctoral residency through the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) accredited clinical psychology residency program at Eastern Health in St. John’s, NL, which included rotations in assessment and treatment with children, adolescents, and families, as well as with adults. Following this, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship through the Mood & Anxiety Disorders Clinic in the Outpatient Psychiatry Department at BC Children’s Hospital.

I am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia.
