Raymond McKie, MSc

Clinician

My areas of expertise

While I have been trained in providing therapy for a variety of mental health challenges, I have particular interest in working with trauma, interpersonal challenges, depression, difficulties with emotions, and identity issues. Although I do not work exclusively with marginalized communities, I do have a good amount of experience working with these populations, especially LGBTQ+ individuals. I strive to provide culturally sensitive, diversity informed, and reflective therapy.

I have experience working with individuals with:

  • Depression and low mood

  • Social anxiety

  • Trauma (e.g., childhood, sexual, military/police service-related)

  • LGBTQ+ issues (e.g., identity, coming out, gender)

  • Sexuality concerns

  • Stressful life transitions

  • Self-esteem

  • Anger

  • Assertiveness

  • Interpersonal difficulties

  • ADHD and attention, OCD, Tourette Syndrome

My approach to therapy

I use evidence-based treatments, most commonly a mix of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). I believe that the way we think about situations as well as the way we feel about them are key targets to work on to create change. With regard to trauma, I am trained to utilize Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), and Emotion Focused Therapy for Trauma (EFTT).

My background

I recently completed my Predoctoral Residency through Vancouver Coastal Health. During this time, I worked in three clinics: Sexual Health working alongside medical teams for clients experiencing a variety of sexual health difficulties; the BC Operational Stress Injury Clinic, working with individuals and family members of RCMP and the Canadian Military (dealing with service-related trauma); and the Outpatient Mental Health and Substance Use Unit, with an emphasis on suicidality. Previously, I have worked in a variety of hospital, private practice, and community settings (e.g., Royal Ottawa Hospital; Ottawa Institute for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy [OICBT]; Centre for Change, Ottawa; Child, Adolescent, and Family Centre of Ottawa [CAFCO]; Western Quebec School Board; and Centre for Psychological Services and Research, University of Ottawa).

I am currently finishing my PhD in Clinical Psychology through the University of Ottawa and preparing for registration with the newly amalgamated College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC). I have previously studied at the University of Guelph, Trent University, and Wilfrid Laurier University.

In addition to my clinical practice, I am an avid researcher in gay & bisexual men’s psychological and sexual health. I have published 20 peer-reviewed academic papers/community reports and have authored or co-authored more than 50 talks and posters at national and international conferences. To date, I have also co-mentored 30 undergraduate students on research within psychology, health sciences, and sexuality. In 2022, the University of Ottawa awarded me the Nicole LaViolette Friends of Lambda Scholarship for students who have demonstrated excellence in research. In 2017, the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality awarded me with a Rising Scholar Award. I continue to find passion in research, some of which can be found here: https://scholar.google.ca/citations?user=Yz2TEnEAAAAJ&hl=en
